Abstract:

This contribution aims to analyze the evolution of the concept of responsibility as an indicator of moral progress, understood both as the refinement of individual beliefs and as the improvement of social practices. Starting from a desideratum that has emerged in recent literature—particularly in the work of Buchanan and Powell—the author highlights how the concept of responsibility, although frequently mentioned, remains underexplored. Through a comparison between Hegel’s theory of responsibility and its juridical elaboration by Michelet, the paper shows how the shift from a purely causal conception to one that includes intentionality and moral awareness constitutes a paradigmatic example of moral progress. Finally, the urgency of a reconceptualization of the concept of responsibility in light of contemporary global challenges is emphasized.
