Giulia Battistoni: Il privilegio della follia. Hegel tra diritto, morale e antropologia, il Mulino, Bologna 2024 (ISBN: 978-88-15-39112-4).

Synopsis:

In what sense does madness essentially characterize the human being, and to what extent can the mad person truly be held accountable? This volume traces a path that, starting from the jurisprudence of the time, offers a novel exploration of Hegel’s text, providing an original reinterpretation of the sections on Anthropology and Morality. What emerges is Hegel’s profound interest in contemporary debates on a theme central to both medicine and law, allowing the author to situate the reflections of the Stuttgart philosopher within the broader context of the fundamental theoretical shifts of the period. Beginning with Kant, moving through the observations of the father of modern psychiatry, Pinel, and reaching Hegel and the development of his thought in the anthropological and juridical domains, the study identifies and analyzes those features of mental disorder that proved fruitful not only for the nascent field of forensic psychiatry but also for the insights and ideas of contemporary psychiatry.
